Ruby, the wiggle dancer

Dec 22

Ruby comes home from the hospital

Ok . . . she’s home!  Picked her up about 6:0o p.m tonight.  I was anxious about seeing her for the first time minus a leg, shaved, and with a huge incision but once I saw her sweet face that’s all that mattered.  She was really doped up (a very good thing) and having much difficulty trying to hop/wobble/limp around.  It took both Jim and I with a towel each slung around her belly to get her into the house.  Got her settled in her pen in the family room – she whined a little and slept a little.  She did manage to wolf down a half bowl of food – she’s is a lab after all!  She drank a little water, slept a little more. We did the 2 towel fire drill to get her back outside for “her business”.  She peed like a race horse.  We “towelled” her back inside and she flopped down for another nap.  She’s now sleeping on her good side – that must be more comfortable but not necessarily pretty to look at . . . move on! I’ll be sleeping on the couch nearby for the next couple nights.  Sweet dreams sweet Ruby!

Yep, you’ve already figured it out. Good job, humans! Ruby knows the drill: eat, sleep, pee, poop, heal. No regrets!

    P.S.
My Charley is also a chocolate lab (he is 3 years old) and he had his left front leg amputated (osteosarcoma) on 10-28-10. Feel free to email me with any questions or concerns. I would love to help!

Just getting somewhat back to normal and wanted to thank you for the support. We seem to be doing ok so far. Thanks for reaching out to us! (We have another choco lab, Latte, a 12 year old, who just wonders why Ruby is getting all the attention now . . .) Cindy & Ruby

I am so glad she did well with the surgery, that she is now back with her family. What kind of pain meds did they give you for her? Did it include Gabapentin? You should ask about it, the sooner taken the better the effect.
Hang in there, she might have a bumpy couple of weeks but she will be so glad that the pain from the cancerous leg is gone!!

Hi Elizabeth. Finally out of the fog this crazy situation put us in and realized I didn’t respond. Ruby’s on carprofen in pill form and something in a patch that she wears until 12/26 – can’t remember what it is. She is doing really well – doesn’t seem to be in pain, learning how “the hop”, peeing, pooping, eating, sleeping so I think all is as good as can be under the circumstances. I’m waiting the inevitable downs that go with the ups but so far so good. Thanks so much for the support! Cindy and Ruby

wonderful – home is for healing. we always felt adding additional medicinal naps to everybody’s ‘to do list’ was wise. paws crossed that ruby continues to heal quickly with very few bumps in the road ahead.
